Multilingual non-Latin domain names may become reality

Many have thought about the idea of having non-Latin domain names, however, up until now this has never materialised. This is all about to change.
For those of you who have waited 10 years for this, multilingual domain names may become a reality soon. ICANN are close to approving the availability of .com domain names in non-latin alphabets. This means for those whose native tongue is Arabic, Greek, Chinese, Japanese and many other languages; they will now be able to register domains in their mother tongue. So, next year, you might type:
www.????.com
www.??.com
www.????.com
www.????.com
How cool is this? I can see thousands of people getting ready to purchase top domain names in many different languages!
The next year will be a very interesting year for internet specialists and those working in SEO. It will also open up more doors for spammers to attack vulnerable users.
What about the SEO side?
I don’t imagine SEO will change all that much, and search engines are probably working at the moment to create new search filters to filter websites by domain language. However, it would probably become more difficult to optimise an English-written site for a Japanese search engine and it may also be made against the law to have a site’s content different to that of the domain name.
Thinking about the new change a little further, it could actually make optimising your site even simpler. We’ll just have to wait and see how this will affect us!
