The best SEO friendly Content Management Systems for Windows servers

You really want to know the fastest ways to make money at home? Check This Out

As most people will know, pre-built content management systems are, in most cases, the cheap alternative to having a site built from scratch. Below, I will list some CMSs that have SEO-beneficial properties.

Kentico CMS – this content management system has some really good SEO functionality such as SEO-friendly URL rewriting, unique Meta titles (for each product level category), descriptions and keywords as well as editable image alt attributes and header elements. Most content management systems I have seen only incorporate some of these elements, but this one seems to be quite well optimised. In my opinion, this is definitely one to look out for.

Dave’s Asp.net SEO-Friendly CMS – even though this one has a rather unusual name it has similar features as the Kentico CMS but is primarily aimed towards small businesses. It incorporates a blog-style interface and was initially inspired by WordPress. However, unfortunately, it will only run from the latest version of IIS, version 7. But, that said, if you have a small business and wish to obtain web presence quickly, you can’t go far wrong with this – and best of all it’s free.

WebFoundations CMS – this CMS is pretty basic but includes URL rewriting for SEO-friendly URLs, templates and requires no database as it stores the information in an XML file. Although this CMS only has basic SEO functionality, it should not be too difficult to implement dynamic Meta information, RSS feeds, site maps and alt attributes etc.

About a month ago my colleague Philip Pollock wrote a post about how you can utilise online tools to improve your keyword lists. I thought I’d expand on that a little this month, by introducing the offline resources that every good PPC manager should make use of.

Having worked client-side previously, I found that it’s easy to become an expert in the products / services that you are marketing on a day-to-day basis. The difficulty comes when you move to an agency where you are managing multiple clients, all with different products / services you are unfamiliar with.

Obviously research is key, and familiarising yourself with your client websites is a must, as is speaking to the client in order to absorb their industry knowledge and experience. Even after doing all this it could well be the case that you don’t have a real understanding of how a particular customer goes about researching or buying a given product. So, how can we overcome this?

Well, the answer is simple really, look at all the people who aren’t involved in marketing you interact with on a daily basis, whether they’re family, friends or work colleagues, see if you think any of them fit into your target audience and, if they do, let the questioning commence. For example, if you had to create an AdWords campaign for an organic cosmetics company, it’s fair to say that as a 20-something male you’re not going to have had much interaction in this realm before. The perfect person to approach in this situation may be your mother or your sister, let them see the website and ask them how they would search for a product like this.

I know it sounds simple but, the fact is, good marketing is all about observing the world around you and reacting to it. If you’re still sceptical, all I ask is that next time you get a new client, look for that relative or friend that fits the demographic and ask their opinion, you might find that you learn something that you never knew before!

Link Building for Bing

You really want to know the fastest ways to make money at home? Check This Out

Link building is one of the main tasks for any website marketer aiming for long term search engine optimisation growth. This is something that Google has shown to us to be true over the years. With Microsoft’s new search engine ‘Bing’, could things be different? Well, not according to Bing:

”Bing’s position on link building is straightforward – we are less concerned about the link building techniques used than we are about the intentions behind the effort. That said, techniques used are often quite revealing of intent.”

Google is similar in this way. Rather than focusing on good versus bad technique, the search engines are more concerned with why webmasters perform certain tasks. That’s why one technique may work well for some but get other webmasters flagged for spam. Again, from Bing, they seem to make clear what they are after from a website:

”The webmasters who create end user value within their websites, based on the needs of people, are the ones who will see their page rank improve. So where does that value come from? Content. Good, original, text-based content.”

So all good link building starts with good content. That’s true for all the major search engines. Good link building includes seeking links from relevant sites, seeking out high authority websites and staying natural. Again, this is very similar to Google. The good news is, Bing’s list of link building best practices is the same as what we’ve all been saying for some time now. The bad news, if there is any, is that Bing isn’t being particularly innovative here. But why fix a method that isn’t broken?

Ensure Your Mobile Site is SEO Friendly

You really want to know the fastest ways to make money at home? Check This Out

An increasing number of people are now using their mobile phones to perform searches on the internet. With this in mind it seems ever more important to have a mobile site ready to capture that particular audience.

When building a mobile phone site it is important that the search engines can index the pages and this is where some sites are losing out on the benefit of having a mobile presence. With many mobile sites, Google, and other search engines find that their bots are unable to crawl the site. Generally, this is because some mobile sites refuse access to anything except mobile phones, meaning that all search engines are blocked.

For some tips on ensuring that your mobile site is SEO friendly, see the points below:

  • Create a Mobile Sitemap and submit it to Google. This will inform Google of the sites existence and encourage it to visit the site. For help in creating this sitemap see Webmaster Tools: Creating Mobile Sitemaps
    • Ensure that your site can be crawled by all search engines e.g. allow the user-agents to crawl the site, especially the ‘Googlebot-Mobile’ user-agent. To do this, always look to see if the string ‘Googlebot-Mobile’ is included in the user-agent header
    • Ensure that your mobile site’s URLs are recognised by the search engines. To do this, check that your Doc Type Definitions are in a format recognised by mobile devices e.g. XHTML Mobile.
