Is Bing paying for content to beat Google?

Reported in the news today is the possibility that Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp, one of the largest publishers of content on the web, is in talks with Microsoft over the prospect of their new search engine Bing becoming the only search engine able to crawl Rupert Murdoch’s sites.

If the plan goes ahead, it would mean that Google would be banned and blocked from spidering content (at least without paying for it), and all existing Rupert Murdoch content would be “de-indexed”.

Microsoft have spent hundreds of millions of pounds launching Bing, and with just under 10 percent of the search market, Bing is struggling to make much of an impact with online searchers. Therefore, it is no surprise they are doing everything they can to try and damage Google’s margins.

The newspapers have yet to find a reliable way of making money from their own content, while hard-copy newspaper sales are decreasing at an alarming rate and so they are understandably interested in the outcome of the Murdoch-Bing deal.

Although it’s a bold move from Microsoft, it is quite clear, to me at least, that this would be very disruptive to the Internet as a whole. Once one publisher makes a decision like this, it is very likely others will follow. Microsoft has already approached other large publishers about removing their content from Google.

Despite this, there won’t be much to stop Google from caching duplicates of the original articles. Blog posts containing the same content scraped from these original sites, for example, will be very difficult to stop.

Remove category in WordPress

For me, when I build a WordPress blog one of the biggest issues I usually have with this is the way that the category URL presents itself. The normal way that a category, or sub-category, presents itself in WordPress is displayed below.

http://www.test.com/category/test-category-1/post-name.html

As you can see, the main issue is that the URL contains category in the blog post URL. This is a problem when trying to place a keyword in the URL, just after the domain name. To resolve this there is a very simple technique that can be used to remove the /category/ section in the URL.

All that is needed is to go into the back-end of WordPress and select the Permalinks option, where you can change the category base so that it reads /.

google1

The image above shows what should be placed in the Permalinks section of the website. Once this has been completed, the Category section will be removed from the URL and this means that you new URL will look like the following:

http://www.test.com/test-category-1/post-name.html#

Removing the Category section is really useful as we can then push a keyword close to the domain name, this in turn will allow the search engines to distinguish what keywords the website is trying to push.

The importance of clear and concise content

Whether you have your own website or a portfolio of clients, you’ll surely understand just how important the content of a website is. There is little point in optimising your website if it’s just full of irrelevant or poor copy.

However, get your content spot on, and you’re on to a winner.

Clear and concise content can bring many benefits and can stand a website in good stead without the need for any expensive or ‘black hat’ techniques.

Obviously, the purpose of your site is to provide information or a service to your target audience and once you have the attention of this audience you’ll want to keep it.

Concise content can help to significantly lower the bounce rate of your site. One of the main causes of a high bounce rate is irrelevant or illegible content. If your content doesn’t get straight to the point or is misleading, then the user will be logging off in no time.

Alternatively, great content can increase traffic and visitors will return to your site regularly, which will do wonders for its reputation.

If your site is information heavy, then using bullet points is a fantastic way of making the text more readable. You should also ensure that you keep paragraphs and sentences short and simple and avoid using confusing technical jargon.

Once you’ve perfected your content you’re free to concentrate on making your site look fantastic – which makes for a winning combination.
