New Additions to Google

You really want to know the fastest ways to make money at home? Check This Out

This week in Search, which is run on Google’s official blog every Friday, has highlighted some new features which have been added to their search results.

The first of which is a feature called “Answer Highlighting”. It may not be the most advanced addition; however, by simply highlighting your search question into the results, this makes it very simple to find quick answers. The example Google gives to test the feature is: Who is the author of 1984? The answer is obviously George Orwell, as shown here.

You will notice across the results that “the author of 1984” is strongly highlighted to improve results.

The next big addition is the increasing support for Rich Snippets. Rich Snippets are the extra mark-up you can add to your website’s content which allows Google to pull specific information (snippets) into its search results.

The new snippets supported are for events. The example on the blog suggests that if, for instance, you performed a search for Concerts in San Jose, you will find that the upcoming events are shown directly inside the results, much like a search result can have site links and website reviews.

If you are technically minded you can follow this link to see how you can add this feature to your website.

Rich Snippets seems to be gaining in popularity since Google took a supported interest in them, and is now worth considering for any new website, to give it an edge in the rankings.

How writing for the web differs from writing for print

You really want to know the fastest ways to make money at home? Check This Out

Although it may seem like a simple enough concept to grasp, many people still don’t understand the differences between writing for the web and writing for a printed publication. Even though you may be writing about the same topic, writing for the web and writing for print need to be handled in completely different ways and different techniques need to be used.

Scanning

Studies have shown that internet users ‘scan’ pages for relevant information rather than reading the entire page thoroughly. If a user has reached your site through a search engine, they’re likely to be looking for something specific and may have visited numerous sites before yours. If they don’t see exactly what they’re looking for, it’s highly likely that they won’t be sticking around on your site for very long.

Positioning of text

Unlike a magazine or newspaper article, where readers generally read systematically from left to right and straight down, it has been shown that web content is often read in a very different manner. This is why it’s vital to sum-up what the page is about at the top of the page and at the start of the text, rather than waffling on. When reading a newspaper or magazine, readers are more likely to have picked up the publication out of choice – unlike a web page, which they may have stumbled across unintentionally.

Make it snappy

The importance of writing short, relevant sentences and paragraphs for web copy can’t be emphasised enough. Drone on for longer than is necessary and you’ll swiftly see your bounce rate shoot through the roof!

Mastering the art of writing for the web just takes a little practice and will help to enhance any SEO campaigns that you have.

The benefits of using a blogging platform such as WordPress

You really want to know the fastest ways to make money at home? Check This Out

To increase your online presence and generate sales from your website, you need both high quality static content as well as content that is updated regularly. The regularly updated content, that usually takes the form of a blog, can give information regarding news in your field of expertise, give advice or tips, increase the interest levels in your site, increase traffic levels and hence make you an authority in your business area. The static pages can then convert this interest into sales.

A great way to add a blog to your website is to use the blogging platform WordPress. WordPress is really easy to use and is also SEO friendly, making it an ideal tool for your search engine optimisation campaign.

A few of the notable benefits of using WordPress are listed below:

• The software is open source and is being developed and upgraded all the time
• There is a huge selection of blog themes and plugins available
• You can create specific categories and sub-categories
• WordPress blogs can be scheduled
• Readers can participate by using comments
• You can create pages as well as posts
• You can have multiple authors
• SEO friendly URLs
• WordPress is really easy to use

Using WordPress is the perfect way to regularly add new content to your website. And, because it is so easy to use, there are no excuses for not keeping your site regularly updated.
