SEOMoz have released a new tool for users in place of Yahoo’s popular Site Explorer – Open Site Explorer

Yahoo Site Explorer is used by SEOs to find the number of backlinks a page has. Google isn’t used for this as it doesn’t give you an accurate number.
Now, one question arises: Why develop such a tool when Yahoo is already very good?
I’m sure you have heard that the search side of Yahoo may be taken over by Bing, and if this does go ahead, there is a lot of speculation that Yahoo may close Site Explorer.
This tool is very rich in features and the amount of information it gives. Master this and you will have that extra edge over most of your competitors and contemporaries (Unless, of course, they also use this!)
The cool aspect of this tool is the amount of options you have to play around with, such as filtering links which are nofollow only!
Many have asked why SEOmoz have brought such a tool when they already have the great LinkScape tool. Well, SEOMoz CEO Rand Fishkin has answered this quite nicely, in a blog post you can find here.
Please let me know what you think!

You’ve added a blog to your site and you’re uploading news and informative articles as part of your search engine optimisation efforts. You will probably have identified several major keywords for your site as a whole. How do you go about using these in you blog articles?
Major keywords and long tail key phrases
First of all, it’s worth making a distinction between the major, high-traffic keywords which are perhaps associated with your homepage and long tail key phrases.
Your major key phrases are likely to be two or three words long and will relate to your products and services in a fairly obvious way. Long tail key phrases are less predictable and are likely to be phrases for which you aren’t consciously optimising, but for which your site will show up in search results all the same.
Using major keywords in your blog posts
It’s important to remember that you don’t have to use your major keywords in your blog posts. While your site as a whole may be optimised for these terms, your blog is supplementing that. Major keywords are likely to crop up naturally so long as you are writing on a relevant topic. If they don’t appear in a particular article, there is no need to worry. That particular blog post is hardly likely to start ranking for a hugely competitive search term. It will get traffic for your site in other ways – specifically through long tail searches.
Broaden the content of your website
A blog is about broadening the number of keywords from which your site will receive traffic. If you’re constantly targeting the same keyword with every article, you’re not adding anything new. By writing around your topic, perhaps deliberately focusing on more niche areas, you will receive traffic from a wider range of search terms, but ones which are still relevant to your business.
