Write for your reader

When you’re writing content for your site, it can sometimes be tempting to cram the article full of keywords. But always remember; you are writing for your readers, not for Google.

By aiming your articles at the readers and making it useful to them, you will automatically be making it relevant to Google anyway, so don’t get too hung up on SEO when writing.

Google as well as other search engines, presents pages which will be useful to the reader and they determine this by what that person has typed into the search engine. So in order to be one of those pages that Google picks up, you will need to ensure that your article talks about the relevant topic in detail, that it is informative and that it contains keywords which are likely to be searched for.

The idea is to naturally appear in the search engine results because your article is useful and relevant, not because you have crammed in the keywords.

Always remember that you will usually not rank high in the search engine results straight away. This will normally take time and there are a lot of factors which can contribute. But by always concentrating on your reader and not getting too hung up on what the search engine wants, you will be well on your way to being considered a valuable resource by Google.

Bing + Yahoo = More competition

You really want to know the fastest ways to make money at home? Check This Out

After seven months of waiting, European Union and US regulators have agreed that the integration of the two companies is in the best interests for the consumer and competition. It is currently estimated that Google occupies about 90% of the search market, with Bing and Yahoo gaining approximately 10%. Although the integration of the two technologies can start today, it isn’t expected to be rolled out until 2012, with Bing supplying the search results side of the business and Yahoo supplying the sales and advertising end.

How will this affect the user?

I don’t expect there to be much change as far as the user is concerned. They will continue to use the easiest and most accurate search engine, so the advantage is that Google’s technology will move at an even faster pace, providing us with more relevant search results.

How will this affect advertisers?

This is the interesting part of the merger. I’m hoping advertisers and agencies will see an improvement in the advertising platform for Bing, and especially Yahoo, which has seen little improvement since the first roll out from the Overture to the Yahoo platform. Also, we hope to see the cost per click decrease within Google as cheaper options from the merger could become available. This is dependent on Bing/Yahoo attracting enough users.

We could also see a change in the way Ad Texts are limited. To define themselves against Google, there could be a change in format allowing for more creative and attractive advertisements on the main SERP.

Time to Place more Importance on Optimising for Bing

“We Bing and we Bing and we Bing. Bing! Bing! Bing!”
Steve Ballmer (CEO, Microsoft) – at CES 2010

In my opinion, when optimising their site, most people only concentrate on Google for a variety of reasons, such as:

  1. Largest market share
  2. Optimising for Google generally gets you good rankings in the other search engines
  3. Bing? Never heard of it!

So, why is it now more important than ever to start to gain good rankings in Microsoft’s most successful attempt at search; Bing?

Bing

You may have heard of Microsoft’s recent announcement – The Windows Phone 7 Series (which is their new mobile OS to replace Windows Mobile). It has captured the minds of most people and has created a lot of excitement. This, inevitably, is going to lead to millions of people purchasing the new Windows 7 phones.

Windows Phone 7 Series

“OK, so what does this have to do with Bing?”

Every Windows 7 Series phone will have a search button that will link to Bing and use its decision engine for all the searches, both local to the phone and on the web.

You may have also heard of the following:

    1. Facebook search will soon be powered by Bing
    2. Apple are also considering ditching Google and making Bing the default search engine on the iPhone (and this probably means the iPad too).
    3. Facebook is now the second most popular site in the US

Now putting together all of the 4 points above… Yes, it seems to me that Bing is going to gain a lot of the market share for search in the coming few years.

      Bing Bing Bing

      Bonus:

      Windows Live

Windows Live profiles and updates will also show on the new Windows Phone 7 Series. So, from an SMO viewpoint, Windows Live will become a big player in the industry.
