Phishing is a fraudulent technique to acquire sensitive information such as identity theft, user names, passwords and credit card details. Such phishing attacks are typically carried out through scam emails / instant messaging software such as Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger and ICQ, etc. These emails might appear to come from your bank, Microsoft, Social networking sites or even the biggest paid search advertising programmes such as Google Adwords.

To make a scam email look more convincing, scammers may add company logos or place links that will take you to a page which looks exactly like an official site. The trick is to check the web address of these links as this will help you to take the right steps. Recently, one of our clients reported a phishing /scam email to us, which appeared to be sent through Google Adwords. Here is a kind of message you will read when you open such email:

We stopped running your Google ads this morning (Monday, 22 March 2010, 07:09:50).

Dear AdWords Advertiser,

We encountered a number of issues when reviewing your ads this morning and so have stopped running them. We will review them again and make the necessary changes that will allow to run your ads without any further problems.

Click here to review your email and let us know if we made a mistake

We’ll often stop running your ads until we are able to make the necessary updates. As soon as we have made and saved the changes, your ads are automatically resubmitted to us for review.

Please note: If you do not verify the status of your Adwords account and notify us if your ads do not appear online, we cannot help you and your ads will stay offline for the next few days.

Of course, this scam message will accompany the official Google Adwords logo. To find out if it’s a genuine email from Google you can check all links for the actual domain, which will always be google.com and not in this case google-vm.com. You can do this by resting your mouse over the link which will reveal the web address you’ll be moved to once you click on such a link.

Google will never ask you any personal details nor will provide you with a link to log in to your Adwords account.  It will only ask you to go to your Adwords account and do any necessary changes or updates. In case you feel that you’ve been a victim of such an email, contact your client manager immediately, run anti-malware software and change your Adwords account password.

Google Adwords phishing /scam emails

Following up on recent goings on in China, Google has written a blog post on their official blogspot detailing their plans for their presence in the country.

According to David Drummond, Corporate Development and Chief Legal Officer, recent events, including the allegation that attacks originating from China were logged gaining regular access to Human Right activists connected with China, and also ongoing attempts to block access to many popular social media websites has given Google reason to remove the censoring of its products.

They have achieved this by redirecting all visitors from google.cn to Google Hong Kong (google.com.hk).

Google have expressed that doing so is entirely legal and hope China respects their actions, however we all know this is far from over and await China’s response and actions on the matter.

If you want to keep up to date with which Google services are blocked in China, you can visit Google’s monitoring tool which details which products are blocked from Chinese viewing (http://www.google.com/prc/report.html#hl=en).

Website readers will generally skim a page for relevant information. They will probably only read every sentence if they find something interesting and appropriate.

Because of this, you need to write in a slightly different style than you may be used to; long, convoluted analogies won’t keep readers – no matter how inventive they are.

So, you need to try and keep each sentence accurate, to the point and concise. This is not always as easy as it sounds, because we don’t speak like that and almost never think like that. Don’t overstate things, but also don’t assume your readers know everything.

Punctuation and paragraphing can really help with this, as sometimes a lots of short sentences can sound stilted. The key isn’t necessarily short sentences, just relevant sentences.

For example, instead of:

“Make sure after you’ve washed your car you dry it with chamois leather, or the water will leave unattractive streaks all over the windows, which can even lead to driving visibility problems.”

Try something like this:

“Remember to dry your car with chamois leather after washing. This will prevent unattractive water streaks and will leave your windscreen clear for optimum visibility.”

So, you run a business which works on a global scale and are looking for search engine optimisation to promote your business. You’re probably wondering where you would even start with this. Firstly, you need to understand how search engines work. Search engines want the information they provide to be relevant and useful to the searcher. If that searcher happens to be German-speaking and based in Germany then obviously the most relevant results would be those provided in their native language, from within that country. Therefore, you need to look at having a multitude of websites, each aimed at providing information for each individual country you want to target.

• Buy the domain names relevant to the countries you want to target e.g. www.companyname.co.uk for the UK, www.companyname.us for the United States, www.companyname.fr for France and www.companyname.cn for China etc. This will help Google to recognise that the site is geo-targeted to a specific country.

• Another way to help the search engine to recognise that you are wanting to target users in a specific country is to ensure that the site is held on a server within that country. Therefore you will need to undertake some research into hosting companies.

• Include the website content in the native language of the country being targeted.

• Lastly, if you have global offices, mention the office address on the relevant website.

By creating sites in this way, search engines such as Google will recognise that each website is targeted at a different location. This will prevent the issues of duplicate content across the sites. For example, the UK and the US are both English speaking countries and will therefore contain the same content. However, because the sites are domains targeted towards different countries, Google will recognise this and will therefore not penalise either of the sites for duplicate content.
